Album
Jeopardy is the debut studio album by English post-punk band the Sound, released on 1 November 1980 by record label Korova. The album fared poorly commercially, but received critical acclaim. One single, Heyday, was released from the album. Following their 1979 EP Physical World, the band started work on a full-length album. Impressed by the rough mixes, Korova signed the group. Jeopardy was recorded inexpensively at Elephant Studios in London, and was produced by the Sound themselves and Nick. Jeopardy - The Sound. Despite the production's rough edges, the limited budget that fostered it, and the feeling that it sounds more like several A-sides and a couple decent B-sides thrown together than a singular body, Jeopardy is a caustic jolt of a debut that startles and fascinates. Not being overly familiar with The Sound, it was an interesting experience for me. Bands such as Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure come to mind when listening to this album. Mainly because it does not exactly sound like them, but there are some strong similarities. I must say this album was somewhat enjoyable for myself. It brought back the nostalgia of teenage youth within the lyrics. Resistance, for example is a good example of the rebellious spirit we have as youth. Jeopardy is the first studio album by the Sound. Warner Brothers imprint Korova picked up the post-punk band on the merit of the demo cuts for what would become this album. The band recorded it in a single week on a shoestring budget, and it feels like it in the best of ways-each song plays like a live show, with no over-slick studio polishing to interfere with the immediacy of the performance. While the album and its single, Heyday, received immense praise from critics, it failed to receive the kind of popular attention that could have sent it to the top of the charts. Jeopardy Q&A
