Shades of Gray is the first EP released by Christian alternative rock band The Choir known as Youth Choir at this point, released in 1986. Because the band was gearing up for a 20-city tour in support of Steve Taylor, the EP was recorded in a furious rush to be ready in time, hence the demo feel to the songs. Youth Choir never intended to release an EP, but the record company acquired it as the resolution to a contract dispute, which freed the band to be signed by MyrrhLA later that year. Shades of Gray. CD - Concord Jazz CCD 4571. Overview . Throughout this enjoyable set, guitarist Gray Sargent is the epitome of cool, unhurried, and relaxed no matter what the tempo. Sargent is accompanied by bassist Marshall Wood and drummer Ray Mosca and, on half of the set, great pianist Dave McKenna. The music falls between swing and bop, sounding both spontaneous and fully under control. Sargent, who has a very appealing sound, uplifts each of the standards and some of them particularly the ones with McKenna swing quite hard. Track Listing. Gray Sargent has been associated with Tony Bennett for many years, however his career began with his superlative techniques as a soloist. This was his first album and is a fine demonstration of his considerable technique and dynamic emotional range. He has a unique 'sound' for a modern jazz guitarist, favoring an almost acoustic sound. You can hear the steel of the guitar strings in his playing as he manages to extract a wide range of tone from the instrument. He manages to use this dynamic tonal range to enhance the melody.
