Following the Spanish Breakfast marvel was a tough job indeed. But Erwan is undoubtedly one of the finest French artist in quality Electronic Music nowadays, and his Tohu Bohu album ranks among the best thing that happened on the scene in this end of 2012. Quite noticeably, most tracks bring a delightful reminiscence of the classic Boards of Canada sound, but with quite more groove injected into them. At the same time the album feels a natural sequel to Spanish Breakfast and is on the same quality level. Some tracks are absolute killers both rhythmically and musically speaking. I'd have a reserve for "Let's Go" track which seems coming out of nowhere and tends to ruin an otherwise perfect album. This track, although VERY well produced, is in a very different style, sort of hipity hop, very similar to Versatile label sound "à la Gilb'R" for those who know what I mean... Quite disappointing IMHO compared to the other dreamy tracks, which are absolutely fabulous and all flowing in a common vain. Who knows what happened when they produced the album... Compared to Spanish Breakfast, this album requires a little more "tries" before getting hooked. When listening to it the first time, you may expect a very accessible and groovy music (like Spanish Breakfast) which would not appear instantly. But what this album lacks in immediate accessibility, it certainly gains in deepness. Once hooked you really can't stop listening to this magic album, as the melodies (and vicious beats) tend to linger in your mind all day long. Anyway certainly an album to get... 5 stars.
