Album
Trombonist Ray Anderson's Pocket Brass Band is aptly named, not only because of its size and instrumentation the other members are Lew Soloff on trumpet, Bobby Previte on drums, and Matt Perrine on sousaphone, but also because the group's sound is so deeply rooted in New Orleans. In fact, with its funkymilitary drum sound and penchant for ensemble improvisation, the group often sounds like a chamber version of the raucous second-line jazz bands of the past. The result is delightful Anderson draws from a seemingly bottomless bag of growls, mutters, and shouts, and sometimes threat. Sweet Chicago Suite - Ray Anderson Pocket Brass Band. Anderson is equally at home whether improvising with modernist Anthony Braxton, leading big bands, splitting hairs with guitarist Christy Doran and renowned Dutch drummer Han Bennink or exploring the outer limits of his instrument while performing with the BassDrumBone trio. Yet Anderson also enjoys delving into some straight ahead jazz, funk and R&B from time to time which is evident on his latest release for ENJA Records titled, Where Home Is. Ray Anderson born October 16, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois is a jazz trombone and trumpet player. Trained by the Chicago Symphony trombonists, he is regarded as someone who pushes the limits of the instrument. He is a colleague of trombonist George Lewis. His Alligatory Band and Pocket Brass Band, featuring tuba player Bob Stewart, are rooted in its tradition. Since 2003 he has taught and conducted at Stony Brook University. Where Home Is Enja, 1998.
