The two instruments Mozart hated most were the flute and the harp. That didn't stop him from writing perfectly fine music when offered the chance to make a buck, and although musical scholars have long lambasted his Concerto for Flute and Harp as musical wallpaper, it's so sensuously pretty that no one else seems to care very much. In any case, Mozart's three concertos calling for solo flute remain the touchstones of repertoire, and no one interested in the artistry of James Galway can afford to be withou. Sir James Galway, OBE born 8 December 1939 is an Irish virtuoso flute player from Belfast, nicknamed The Man with the Golden Flute. He established an international career as a solo flute player. In 2005, he received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the Classic Brit Awards. Galway was born in North Belfast as one of two brothers. His father, who played the flute, was employed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard until the end of the Second World War and spent night-shifts.
