Königsforst is the third album by Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project. It was released in December 1998 on the Mille Plateaux label. The album is named after Königsforst recreation park, near Voigt's hometown of Köln, in which his youthful experiments with LSD provided inspiration for the entire Gas project. The CD and vinyl pressings feature notable differences. The first songs on the vinyl's A and D sides were exclusive to this pressing until the 2016 release of Gas' second box set, Box, where they were. Königsforst is a music album by Gas released in 1998. Königsforst is ranked 6,416th in the overall chart, 1,161st in the 1990s, and 110th in the year 1998. This album is rated in the top 14 of all albums on . Königsforst picks up where the previous Gas album, Zauberberg 1997, left off. If anything, Königsforst adds more techno to the ambient techno equation, as underlying rhythms of looped bass beats pulsate throughout the album whereas they had been more sparingly employed on Zauberberg not heard at all on that album's first and final tracks. German techno producer Wolfgang Voigt again crafts extended soundscapes - ranging from six to 15 minutes - of spare droning melodies, soft textural static or hiss, and distant rhythmic loops of kick drums that often sound submersed or. A worthy successor to Gas' breakout album, Königsforst adds variety to the distant techno rave that haunted Zauberberg. Unlike the steady beat that continued throughout his second record, Königsforst changes up the formula by slowing or quickening the pace. This does well for the change in atmospheric tone, as contrary to Zauberberg, which took a linear and progressively more sinister path, this record is decorated with more heavenly soundscapes, with occasional interjecting moments. read more. This LP is majestic in it's sonic scope. Thunderous kick drums carry the listener through a falling leaf kaleidoscope of forest laden dreams

Funny seeing collectors try to unload these individual albums for around $200 when Box is still in stock for $140 X-D
Mark, if we do this blindfolded test on a hi end tube amp, nice turntable and clear speakers I would be happy to do so. Maybe add a cocktail into the mix as well ;)
I am not suggesting "lower sound quality", only that there are sonic differences in the two pressings. I will have to listen to the other two albums and dig into a deeper comparison. A thing to consider is that down the road it's the box that I'm gonna sell, not the originals.
I'd be curious if I blindfolded you, if you'd be able to tell the difference between the old pressing and the new.
Adam, would you say the same about the other albums of the box? I mean, lower sound-quality?
Hmm interesting! I didnt buy Box yet but I'm kinda happy as-is with Nah Und Fern. That one still gets it done for me.
The thing is, I have both and can say the original sounds better, the gatefold art is choice and the track order is surperlative. In this case, this OG pressing holds it's higher value!
The defining moment of pop ambient. I could live in these tracks. The propulsive wash of muted club beats and orchestral snippets is pure bliss. The fifth track immediately became one of the best sonic excursions I have ever heard. Acid-riddled trips wandering around German forests supposedly produced these visions. Whatever it took, it was well worth it. Music in general for me hasn't been the same since and seems to lack in comparison, which is what brings me back to this sonic place continuously. Between this, his Gas project, and his Studio One releases, Voigt has made some of the most perfectly crafted minimalist techno to ever be released. Konigsforst is the arc that reaches higher than the rest. Like the largest mountain in the range or the oceanic swell that just somehow manages to rise from and above the tides, you're left in awe. What a wonderful thing to experience. Many thanks for that, Wolfgang
The A1 of this LP doesn't feature on the CD, which is a crying shame as it's probably the "Gas anthem". A pounding 4/4 beat and a heavenly rising arpeggio melody make it possibly the least ambient of all the Gas material, but also the most immediate. But at least both the CD and the LP have the 15-minute "untitled 5", which sounds like a slowed-down, darker version of A1, but rather more epic and stately. Lovely stuff.

What is the other LP track that doesn't feature on the CD?
