Bing: A Musical Autobiography was Bing Crosby's fourth Decca vinyl LP, recorded and released in 1954. Ready to retire by 1954, Crosby assembled Buddy Cole and his Trio, a small group formed from members of the John Scott Trotter Orchestra, and re-recorded many of his early hits between April and June 1954. The Decca masters were used for his hits, starting with the 1938 recording of Small Fry Most of the new recordings were done at the American Legion Hall in Palm Springs, California. Harry Lillis Bing Crosby Jr. ˈkrɒzbi May 3, 1903 October 14, 1977 was an American singer, comedian and actor. In 1954, Bing Crosby undertook the most laborious exercise in his entire career, narrating his professional history and re-recording dozens of songs from his two-decade career to present for A Musical Autobiography. While only the pre-1940 material was re-recorded, that's still around 50 songs. Crosby was obviously an old hand at mixing monologue with music from his long years on the radio, and this set is much easier on the ears than many other attempts at the form. It certainly helps that the material is much more insightful than the usual Kraft Music Hall pablum. Bing Crosby, Buddy Cole and His Trio - A Musical Autobiography of Bing Crosby 1927 - 1934.
