Il tramonto Shelley, RESPIGHI - Illuminations The Illuminations, Op. 18, is a song cycle by Benjamin Britten, first performed in 1940. It is composed for soprano or tenor soloist and string orchestra, and sets verse and prose poems written in 18721873 by Arthur Rimbaud, part of his collection Les Illuminations. Britten began writing the cycle in Suffolk in March 1939 and completed it a few months later in the United States. It was the first of his song cycles to gain widespread popularity. The cycle was originally written for. Benjamin Britten. Released January 30, 1940. 18 Tracklist. Fanfare Lyrics. This song cycle for high voice and string orchestra sets verse and prose from Arthur Rimbauds Les Illuminations to music. It premiered in London in January 1940, with Sophie Wyss as soloist and Boyd Neely conducting. It was originally written for a soprano, but it is often performed by a tenor soloist. Though this early work finds the composer changing the contours of his music to fit the French language, the music still sounds like Britten rather than an imitator of Debussy or Poulenc. 18 Q&A.
