Few fans know about him, but virtually everyone in the post-Coltrane jazz avant-gaurd knows Alan-Lester Bowie, Joe Bowie, Alan Shorter, his friends from his music school, Sun Ra's Arkestra, and about five dozen others. How do I know they know Alan: well, they have all worked in his Celestial Communications Orchestra, which is a big name for a big group that Silva has led since the early 1970s. Some of this borders on space rock without the electronics. Silva's work is rare and expensive, which is a shame, because he is one of the true belivers, taking one of the biggest and best free jazz bands around the world for decades. Alan Silva born Alan Lee da Silva January 22, 1939 in Bermuda is an American free jazz double bassist and keyboard player. Silva was born a British subject to an AzoreanPortuguese mother, Irene da Silva, and a black Bermudian father known only as Ruby. He emigrated to the United States at the age of five with his mother, eventually acquiring U. citizenship by the age of 18 or 19. He adopted the stage name of Alan Silva in his twenties. This probably sounded a bit different in 1969, when this album was recorded, but it does give some idea of what one can expect. Bermuda-born to a local father and AzoreanPortuguese mother Alan moved with his mother to New York when he was 5 and grew up in Harlem. During the 50s and 60s he played with many leading jazz musicians, including Sun Ra, Charles Mingus and Albert Ayler among others. Luna Surface is Silva's debut as a leader, and o
